"One" Interview with Kimberly Knight 2023 President
Your itinerary for one perfect day in Virginia: Wow! This would be an extremely busy day covering lots of miles.
I’d start with a perfect sunny day in the 70s with low humidity and I’d need a quick little vehicle that can help me see all the corners or our great state from the mountains to the cities, small towns, and get me back here to Virginia Beach to see the ocean before sundown. Also, I’d need to see my hometown of Richmond and more home for over 20 years in Northern Virginia, too.
I’d include a special party with family, outdoor concerts at the Wolf Trap, Browns Island, The Dome in VB, and other great spots around the state. Of course, I need to set foot at UVA and yell Wahoowa! to my fellow Cavaliers. Also, I’d love to squeeze in special events at public libraries throughout the state, too. I think this can be done if I can get an early start!
One thing you can’t live without: Music! I love to dance and sing along to all kinds of music with friends, family, and even alone.
One project or initiative you’re most proud of from your presidential term: The Growing Library Workers initiative. Our committee created collateral to help all libraries recruit new and diverse people to work in libraries. I’d like to think we made at least a small dent by sharing library worker stories and providing a window into the great opportunities to work in libraries for people interested in a wide variety of work.
One favorite memory from your presidency’s annual conference The Silent Disco was super awesome! I got to dance along to many great jams with all my VLA besties while others enjoyed more silent pursuits in the same room.
One piece of advice for library workers: Keep striving to innovate and delight library customers but take care of yourself, too.
One post-presidency accomplishment you’d like to share: I am celebrating 4 years at Director at Virginia Beach Public Library. I was Deputy Director at Alexandria Library when I was first nominated and elected to be Vice-President/President Elect.
