Historical Collection Librarian

Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Historical Collections Librarian who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other. 

The preferred starting salary for this position is $25.57 hourly ($53,185.60 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. This full-time position performs responsible professional work as the primary point of contact for local history researchers. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Adult Programming & Reference Services Manager and in conjunction with the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society (ACHS) staff.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Manages and promotes local history collection of books housed at both the Central Library and the ACHS Research Library. Provides reference services and adult programming to the public.
  • Provides reference services and other assistance for users needing archival and library materials.
  • Supervises and directs the activities of ACHS volunteers who assist in arranging, cataloging, and maintaining collections of valuable archival materials under the direction of ACHS staff.
  • Prepares and organizes ACHS archival records to facilitate public access.
  • Plans, promotes, and conducts educational and public outreach programs, such as workshops, lectures, and classes.
  • Trains staff and the public in using historical collection and related electronic resources at both JMRL and ACHS.
  • Provides outreach services on behalf of JMRL and ACHS.
  • Evaluates historical documents and archival materials for accession into either library’s collection.
  • Performs direct customer service to the public by staffing reference desk at both JMRL and ACHS, conducting reference interviews and locating items in various formats.
  • Creates and maintains accessible, retrievable computer archives and databases.
  • Assists patrons with photocopying, printing, scanning and faxing materials.  
  • Provides personal device and public computer assistance and training through scheduled individual tutoring sessions and providing limited point-of-need service to help patrons apply for employment and social services, fill out paperwork, print documents, participate in email and social media, gain confidence with Microsoft Office products, and access and use library electronic resources.
  • Responds to phone calls, emails, texts, and chats to provide equitable access to information.
  • May occasionally serve as department/branch manager at the Central Library in their absence or as needed.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory for patrons of all ages online and in person.
  • Performs some general department and/or branch duties.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Requires a flexible schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties:
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

 

Education, Experience and Skills

Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:  Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • Eligibility for professional certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia within the first 2 years of employment AND previous library experience and knowledge of historical collections and research.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with an integrated library system.
  • Experience with historical research in the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library’s service area.
  • Experience on a public service desk.

Position Description
The University of Virginia is seeking applications for the position of Teaching and Learning Librarian. This position will join a collaborative team responsible for designing and delivering instruction and programming that develops students’ information, media, and AI literacy skills. The successful candidate will develop and teach classes and workshops; collaborate on the creation of asynchronous instructional materials; lead community education initiatives; participate in orientations, outreach, and tours; consult with students and faculty; and partner with Library colleagues to assess and respond to curricular needs. In addition, this position also serves as the serve as the liaison to the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, a division of the University dedicated to working professionals and adult learners.

As AI literacy is a growing and strategically important area, this role will design and facilitate workshops and instructional initiatives that support students’ critical and effective engagement with AI tools in academic contexts. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and a demonstrated interest in advancing AI literacy through teaching, experimentation, and program development. The Teaching and Learning department strives to deepen the library's connections and partnerships with faculty, students, and other centers on campus. WHO WE ARE
Chesterfield Public Library is seeking an Outreach Librarian to join its team of innovative, forward-thinking professionals committed to delivering engaging information services to a vibrant and appreciative community.

Assistant Director of Library Services

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The Assistant Library Director supports the Library Director in managing library services, staff, and resources, with direct oversight of key operational functions. Operational Leadership and Management

Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, this position oversees the librarians, staff, and operations of the Research and Scholarly Communication department for the Old Dominion University Libraries. The department includes 5.0 FTE librarians (AP Faculty) who provide direct research support and instruction services to ODU students and faculty, as well as collection development, outreach and engagement, and assistance with scholarly communication questions. The department also includes the Research Data Management Librarian (1.0 AP Faculty) and Scholarly Communication Strategies Librarian (1.0 AP Faculty), who lead the libraries efforts on outreach, education, and infrastructure in these key areas. The department also includes 3.0 2.0 full-time classified staff and one hourly employee who maintains and supports the online repository, ODU Digital Commons. The Head may also provide research support, collection development, instruction and outreach to academic units as needed to ensure continuity of service during department vacancies. Collaborate with research librarians at Brickell Medical Sciences Library to coordinate delivery of services to faculty and students from Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University; collaborate with Libraries Engagement, Libraries Education & Assessment, Special Collections & University Archives, and other library partners as needed on outreach and services to faculty and graduate students. Provides direction for the libraries’ primary services delivery platform (Alma), as well as the public-facing discovery system (Primo), administration of authenticated access sub-systems to provide content and services to local and remote users, IT infrastructure to include onsite and remote servers, online application development, web services to include the libraries' primary website (library.gmu.edu), and desktop support for libraries staff and public users. Provides a leadership role in the design, planning, development, management and enhancements of the libraries’ electronic resources and web presence. Contributes to areas of work within the unit, as needed. Collaborates and coordinates with library departments in all aspects of IT needs.

Technology Services Change Management:
In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Digital Strategies and Services (DSS), evaluates emergent best practices and technologies that would improve the libraries' efficiency and effectiveness in IT operations and library system management, and strategically reskills and directs DTS staff to meet shifting needs and requirements.

Supervision:
Sets clear performance goals that align with the libraries’ mission and strategic plan. Effectively communicates expectations to team members, organizes workflows to optimize productivity, and ensures clarity around roles and responsibilities. Drives employee engagement and development by monitoring performance, providing actionable feedback, fostering professional growth through coaching and training, and promoting a collaborative work environment. Champions compliance by upholding university policies, legal standards, and ethical practices, and takes decisive action when necessary to address performance and/or behavioral issues.

Emergency Preparedness and Digital Preservation:
Develops and maintains a strategy to prevent, mitigate, and recover from data loss due to unexpected events. Conducts IT risk assessment; implements systems, such as backups and remote storage, to provide proactive mitigation; and creates and maintains documentation to support operational continuity. Researches best practices and approaches for IT infrastructure to support digital preservation to ensure the long-term accessibility of digital assets.

Service and Scholarship:
Engages in university and professional service, and in research and creative work as outlined in the George Mason University Librarians’ Handbook and University Libraries Librarians' Council Bylaws.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent certified foreign degree;
  • Significant experience leading digital technology (operating systems, data structures, programming, and networking) initiatives, including demonstrated ability to stay abreast of evolving information technologies;
  • Considerable experience with Library Services Platform technology;
  • Considerable technology project management experience, including planning, executing, and delivering complex initiatives on time and within budget (if applicable), and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives;
  • Experience supervising staff and/or teams;
  • Knowledge of current and emerging information technologies to retrieve, create, and provide information products, services, and tools in a library environment;
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software, networks, and related technologies;
  • Skill in analyzing software packages and hardware configurations to determine those that best fit the organization;
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex, technical concepts with clarity and impact to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Skill with effective delegation, including setting clear expectations and providing adequate supervision; and
  • Ability to build relationships and foster trust and collaboration across diverse teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Considerable experience with the Alma/Primo library management system;
  • Experience managing system migrations to the cloud;
  • Ability to lead organizational change in response to evolving technologies; and
  • Web and digital development knowledge and skills.

Librarian

Pamunkey Regional Library is seeking an energetic, innovative, and community focused librarian to serve as our Adult Programming Librarian for our Atlee Branch. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering a robust portfolio of programs, events, outreach initiatives, and community partnerships that connect adults with library resources, lifelong learning opportunities, and one another.

The successful candidate will be passionate about public service, community engagement, and creating meaningful experiences for adults of all ages and backgrounds. This librarian will work both inside and outside library facilities, building relationships with local organizations, businesses, civic groups, educational institutions, and community partners to expand the Library's reach and impact throughout Hanover and Goochland Counties and the Town of Ashland.

About This Role 

The Adult Programming Librarian serves as a professional librarian at the Atlee Branch of Pamunkey Regional Library and is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering engaging programs and services for adults within the branch and throughout the community. This position works closely with community organizations, local partners, and library staff to expand adult engagement and promote lifelong learning opportunities. In addition to programming responsibilities, the Adult Programming Librarian provides direct public service at service desks, assists patrons with reference and reader's advisory needs, and supports daily branch operations. The position serves as the Person-in-Charge (PIC) in the absence of the Branch Manager or Assistant Branch Manager, ensuring the continued effective operation of the branch and maintaining a high standard of customer service. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong customer service skills, initiative, leadership, and a commitment to fostering meaningful connections between the library and the community it serves.

Minimum Requirements

Qualified candidates must possess one of the following:

  • A Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS), Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution; or
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a public library, educational institution, community engagement organization, or related field; or
  •  An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position.

 Preferences

  • Professional experience planning and implementing programs, events, or community engagement initiatives.
  • Experience providing direct customer service in a public-facing environment.
  • Experience working with adult learners, community organizations, volunteers, or civic groups.
  • Knowledge of public library services, programming, and outreach best practices.
