Meet A Member: Jenny Horton

Jenny HortonWhere do you work?
Lynchburg College

What is your current position?
Public Services Librarian/Coordinator of Instruction

When did you first know that you wanted to be a librarian?
I took an administrative position with a library consortium a couple of years after finishing community college. Over a period of 11 years, I learned on the job and was promoted to positions with more responsibility until I was the system coordinator for a multi-type, multi-state library consortium. The work we were doing and the collegiality among the staff was a huge draw to the profession.

What was your first library job?
The library consortium was my first library job. I was an Administrative Assistant.

What is your favorite part of librarianship?
Connecting people with the information they need, teaching them how to find it themselves and the variety of subjects I get to learn about in a day.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on the job?
When I was pregnant with my first child, I was at a meeting at another library and I got stuck in the stall in the restroom because my belly was so big.

If you could have anything in the universe installed in your office for your personal use, what would it be?
All the technology that exists elsewhere on campus so that the library could learn how to use it and help students.

What is something your colleagues would be surprised to know about you?
I took a motorcycle riding class.
