VLA LGBTQIA+ Forum emails

Hello, and thank you for your interest in the LGBTQIA+ Forum!
I'm so excited to start this journey with you of creating safer spaces in libraries, communities, and the general public, for individuals who are lacking proper representation and support.
While the forum is still new, I will be sending out updates via email and/or the forum, so you can be kept in the loop as the forum progresses. You can also join our listserv by logging into your account at VLA.org. Click “My Community>My Features>E-lists and click the tab to subscribe to the LGBTQIA+ Forum.
By receiving this email, you have been added to the LGBTQIA+ Forum!
Looking for more ways to get involved? Another way to support the forum is by joining within leadership positions! If you have experience with programming, fundraisers, resource/collection development, and/or enthusiasm for the cause (specific to LGBTQIA+ issues), then please inquire about joining the forum as an officer by replying to this email.
The following positions are open:
•    Vice-Chair
•    Secretary
•    Treasurer
I know times are tough, and the world seems to be getting more complicated as the news and media cloud our minds with information overload. However, I believe we are at a pivotal moment in history, in which to celebrate all lives, and the similarities and differences we share. By uplifting this marginalized group and providing representation in Virginia, we can (hopefully) change how people in the LGBTQIA+ community see themselves in the world, in relation to the resources, support, and non-judgement available to them.
So if you can, please join me (as an officer or forum member), on my mission to see that more librarians, VLA members, and the community as a whole to have the tools to become more knowledgeable about providing resources and programming to the LGBTQIA+ community, and have the confidence and support in providing the necessary services for this inspiring assemblage.
I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well, and are staying as healthy as possible until we can unite together as a committee and forum. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me directly.
Warm regards,
Christina Harris, Chair of the LGBTQIA+ Forum

Calling all VLA members:

  • Does your library have a safe space for LGBTQIA+ community members?
  • Does your library have a presence at your local Pride Festivals/community events?
  • Do you want to share ideas and spark creativity among other librarians in your state?
  • Are you unsure of how to implement LGBTQIA+ programs and resources in your library?

Want to make your library space and resources more inclusive to the LGBTQIA+ community, and communicate with librarians about how to do so? Join VLA’s LGBTQIA+ Forum so we can collaborate for a better tomorrow!

The VLA LGBTQIA+ Forum is here to provide information to librarians about current trends and resources that can help engage students who identify within this group. The forum will be a platform for librarians to talk about issues/concerns within the state, share ideas about displays and resources, and strategies on how to engage the community with events and programming that are inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community.

We want to hear about your efforts and what you do to engage and inspire your community, so sign-up now to join the LGBTQIA+ Forum! To join the forum, email Christina Harris, [email protected], for more information. You can also join our listserv by logging into your account at VLA.org. Click “My Community>My Features>E-lists and click the tab to subscribe to the LGBTQIA+ Forum.
When we provide the resources and create safe spaces for people, we give them the opportunity to learn and grow.
Thank you for your support!
