Meet A Member: Lauren Welch

Lauren WelchWhere do you work?
Beatley Central Library Alexandria

What is your current position?
Librarian I, Adult Services

When did you first know that you wanted to be a librarian?
I've always been a curious knowledge and information seeker and have fond memories of reading to my class of stuffed animals as a young child. In college I was a bookseller at Borders and not only developed a fervent love of reading but a passion for helping people find information. Upon graduating with a history degree, I found myself in the midst of applying for jobs not only in museums and government institutions but libraries as well. The rest, as they say, is history.

What was your first library job?
I worked as a library associate at DC Public Library for 3 ½ years.

What is your favorite part of librarianship?
First and foremost, I have a passion for helping others. I love helping people find information, educate themselves, and empower themselves through knowledge and learning. This field and the patrons we serve make for an incredibly diverse work environment and there's never a dull moment. We assist dozens of people each day and when it's all said and done I leave work feeling fulfilled and confident that I've helped enrich someone's life and made a difference.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on the job?
One night after work I was waiting for the Metro and I saw one of my regular tween patrons. Her eyes lit up and she said, "Miss Lauren! What are you doing here? You take the Metro too?" She was just astonished. It made me laugh because I know a lot of kids think librarians live in the library. After that I think I was a bit cooler in her eyes.

If you could have anything in the universe installed in your office for your personal use, what would it be?
A sound system so there's always soft music playing.

What is something your colleagues would be surprised to know about you?
I originally studied music education in college; I am a vocalist and play the saxophone.
