General Summary

 

The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Supervising Technology Services Librarian who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.  

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $23.19 to $30.15 hourly ($48,235.20 - $62,712.00 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, exempt, position. The Supervising Technology Services Librarian is responsible for developing and maintaining equipment and programming. The position manages/supervises a small team of Lab Monitors and Internet Specialists dedicated to sharing and teaching new/current technologies to the public and library staff. Reports to JMRL’s Assistant Library Director.

 

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

 

  • Manages a public service team that operates the Monticello Avenue computer lab at the Central Library.

  • Plans for the transformation of the Monticello Avenue computer lab into a digital media lab.

  • Facilitates access to digital resources for library patrons.

  • Develops in-person and virtual trainings designed to familiarize patrons and library staff with library services.

  • Procures and maintains equipment within the lab.

  • Coordinates and maintains the current Monticello Avenue Community Network.

  • Provides system administration for the current Monticello Avenue Community Network.

  • Offers technical support to the Monticello Avenue Community Network clients.

  • May migrate Monticello Avenue Community Network clients to new platforms.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an accredited college or university.

  • Basic knowledge of library principles and practice.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Previous experience working with and teaching new skills to the public.

  • Prior supervisory experience.

Special Requirements:   

  • Must be able to keep regular work hours according to library and departmental guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Effective written and oral communication skills including reference interview skills.

  • Knowledge of basic functions of hardware and software and proven ability to utilize such products.

  • Knowledge of digital resources and use of technological skills to answer patron inquiries. 

  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to make use of current and emerging technologies.

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to non-experts.  

  • Ability to understand, respond to, and support the needs of external and internal customers. 

  • Ability to manage work tasks and use problem solving skills. 

  • Ability to troubleshoot and conduct routine maintenance of equipment. 

  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply library policies and procedures in an equitable manner. 

  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, schedule, hire and train staff. 

  • Ability to follow departmental opening and closing procedures.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Ability to push a loaded cart of up to 30 pounds. Ability to operate various pieces of equipment such as photocopiers, digital media converters, and printers. Contacts include direct supervisor, other library staff such as departmental and branch managers and the public.
