The University of Virginia Library seeks a dynamic, collegial, and highly-skilled professional to serve as the Librarian for the Arts.  As a member of the Arts and Humanities team, the successful candidate will serve as the liaison to the Department of Art, which includes the Studio Art and Art History programs, and will also work with library colleagues to support arts-related scholarship across UVA’s schools and departments.

The Librarian for the Arts will provide communication and outreach to faculty, students, fellows, and community scholars, cultivating strong partnerships and seeking opportunities for enhanced collaboration. They will provide research assistance to scholars at all levels and participate in digital scholarship projects in collaboration with faculty, students, and library colleagues. The Librarian will engage with faculty to integrate information, digital, and data literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum and will provide instruction in a variety of forms (orientations, course-related instruction, workshops). They will be responsible for working with the Collections Management team and the other liaisons to establish collection priorities for art-related disciplines, recommend specific purchases, maintain digital desiderata lists, and promote newly acquired resources.

As one of two liaison librarians working in the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library, the Librarian for the Arts will be an important supportive and collaborative presence for scholars located in and around the University of Virginia's Arts Grounds. The Librarian will work with colleagues in Information Services and Spaces and Collection Management to help shape the public services and collections of the Fine Arts Library.

The Librarian for the Arts will engage in creative thinking and research projects (both structured and unstructured) to promote innovations in arts-related librarianship. They will be expected to participate in regional and/or national professional organizations related to academic librarianship and arts librarianship in particular.

Expected salary: 70,000-80,0000/ annual

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in library or information science, or a terminal degree in an arts-related discipline and appropriate experience in an academic library.  
  • Strong background in art history, studio art, or a related field.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and enthusiasm for the possibilities offered by academic librarianship as a profession.
  • Familiarity with the tools and methods of digital scholarship.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, team-based organization.  
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with performing arts (such as music, drama, and dance) in an academic context.
  • Professional experience working in a liaison or subject specialist role in an academic library.
  • Familiarity with scholarly publishing models and with open educational resources (OER).
  • Working knowledge of one or more languages other than English.
