Meet a Member: Mary Buck

Mary BuckWhere do you work?
Snow Branch Library, Central Rappahannock Regional Library

What is your current position?
Branch Manager

When did you first know that you wanted to be a librarian?
I was working for an investment company as their librarian/secretary and in my late 20's I decided I would pursue a formal degree. I wavered between an MBA and an MLS, and felt that library science was the more interesting choice.

What was your first library job?
Librarian at an investment company.

What is your favorite part of librarianship?
Hard to choose! I like helping folks find the information they need and I enjoy collection development. I love reader’s advisory — that’s just plain fun!

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on the job?
A little boy, maybe 4, asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. When I told him that I was grown up and that I liked being a librarian he got the most startled expression. I am hoping that he saw me as a fellow kid!

If you could have anything in the universe installed in your office for your personal use, what would it be?
A bookshelf that's like the Tardis and can hold as many books as you need without taking up more space.

What is something your colleagues would be surprised to know about you?
I started in a Pharmacy program my first year of college.
