After a short hiatus, People & Happenings is back!

Have you recently received a promotion? Has your library system hired new staff? Is your building undergoing a renovation or are you adding a new location? Or do you want to celebrate your staff's hard work on a recent event? VLA wants to know!

Anyone in Virginia can share their library updates to be posted on our “People & Happenings” page. Send your news in by the 15th of each month. Please keep your news items brief and please do include any relevant photographs, such as headshots for people and in-progress shots of renovations and new buildings. Central Rappahannock Regional Library

altDONNA COTE has announced her retirement on September 11, 2015, after thirty-four years as the Director of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL). She previously held positions at the CRRL as the Library Secretary, Reference Librarian and Assistant Director. In 2008, she served as president of the Virginia Library Association. During the course of her tenure, Cote spearheaded many initiatives and cemented vital community partnerships that have seen the CRRL firmly established as a core component of the educational and cultural infrastructure of the region. Building projects across the system have included the renovation of the Headquarters; the building of the Porter, Salem Church, England Run, Montross and Newton libraries; and the establishment of the Cooper and Snow Libraries in renovated and expanded spaces. Under Cote’s leadership, the library has been positioned as a resource for lifelong learning, a destination for artistic enrichment, and a welcoming community meeting center.

James Madison University, Libraries and Educational Technologies

murrayDr. ADAM MURRAY joined James Madison University as the new Dean of Libraries and Educational Technologies on July 1, 2015. Dr. Murray previously served as Dean of University Libraries at Murray State University. Dr. Murray earned his BA in Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Sociology, from University of North Carolina at Wilmington, his MLIS from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and his Ed.D. in Postsecondary Education Leadership from Western Kentucky University. He has also been elected to serve on the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) Steering Committee as the representative for the VIVA 4-year colleges and Richard Bland College.

Campbell County Public Library System

CCPLSSummerReadingThe Children’s Program Department won the Campbell County Employee Excellence award for their interpretation of last summer’s Summer Reading theme, “Fizz, Boom, Read.” VALINDA TRENT and KATIE LANE developed and became characters named “Fizz” and “Boom”. They then hosted a STEM-based “tv show” and performed with the children as a live audience.The programming was so successful that the library enjoyed record-breaking attendance and the assumption of some parents that “Fizz” and “Boom” were professionally hired by the county (which they were!). Further, Trent and Lane were invited to present at several local child development conferences on incorporating STEM into daily activities. Lastly, their programming caught the notice of a local funding initiative and resulted in a $25,000 grant annually for the next three years to grow education readiness in the most impoverished part of our county.
