Category: Events

TILC and VLACRL are partnering to co-host the 2026 VLACRL Spring Program on teaching and AI. Please join us at this free and virtual event on Tuesday, March 17, 11 am to 12:15 pm.
We are delighted to announce our presenter is Oscar Keyes! Oscar is the Multimedia Teaching & Learning Librarian at VCU, where he develops educational resources and programming around the use of creative technologies. His research investigates the emergence of cameras in education and their parallels with emerging technologies today. His pedagogical approach considers how social issues can be critically scaffolded into technical instruction for various digital tools, such as image-editing software, game engines, and generative artificial intelligence.
His presentation “What's Really Real: Strategies for Teaching Critical Inquiry through the History of Synthetic Media” will explore an interactive approach to teaching AI-generated images through a historical lens. From spirit photography to deepfakes, analyzing the veracity of synthetic media has always been challenging. These classroom-tested activities are designed to deepen students’ understanding of how synthetic images are created and how to effectively verify them.
Please contact VLACRL Chair Malia Willey ([email protected]) with any questions.
