Essential Duties
-
- Demonstrates a solid commitment to customer service with patrons and with coworkers to create an environment that is welcoming to all members of the public and fellow employees. Train and encourage staff in the delivery of quality public service with emphasis on current trends.
- Develops and maintains community relationships to enhance library services to users of all ages and abilities.
- Plans, implements, and directs innovative, diverse, and collaborative programs and services for adults in conjunction with the Adult Services team.
- Responsible for the hiring, training, and supervising of all Adult Services Staff and is a key member of the Library’s leadership team.
- Manages the Adult Service budgets and all departmental purchasing decisions.
- Sets, interprets, and upholds departmental goals and objectives, policies and procedures.
- Directs collection development; guides and trains fellow staff in selection guidelines and budget allocation; leads ongoing collection maintenance and weeding.
- Provides general and in-depth reference services at the public service desk.
- Reads widely in order to provide appropriate reader’s advisory; stays attune to popular trends in adult literature to keep the collection vibrant and locally relevant.
- Compiles statistics on attendance of all programs throughout the year, including summer reading, for the annual state report. Conducts outcome measures to gauge program impact.
- Action-oriented: takes on new opportunities, anticipates challenges, and provides proactive solutions with a sense of urgency, energy, and enthusiasm.
- Attends professional library conferences, webinars, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and contributes to library staff meetings; represents the Library at City meetings.
- Works collaboratively and cooperatively with other Library and City departments on special projects, events, and outreach efforts.
- Must possess strong technology skills, including the ability to troubleshoot basic computer and printer issues, provide help with copying/scanning/faxing, as well as using technology to create and edit virtual programs.
- Develop appropriate marketing materials and coordinate with the Public Engagement Coordinator for promotion to residents and businesses.
- Respond to legal research requests and instruct patrons in the use of legal materials.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Must be able to work nights and weekends if necessary in the Adult Services Department of the Main Library.
- Serves as a Department Head, and attends meetings when requested by the Library Director.
- Collaborates with other staff members as requested for special projects.
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directly supervises assigned support and professional staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Coordinate with the Branch Manager regarding additional staffing at the Branch.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library school required; minimum 3-5 years of professional library experience working with adults; 3-5 years supervisory experience in a public library strongly preferred.
Salary is negotiable based on qualifications.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Second language highly desirable.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Solid interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills, required for working with citizens, vendors, and other City employees. Other Requirements
- Depending on assignment, possession of valid driver's license issued by Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria may be required.
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
- Must be eligible to obtain library certification from the State of Virginia within 90 days.
