Part-Time Youth Services Assistant Position – Bedford Central Library

The Bedford Public Library System is seeking a friendly, patient, public service oriented individual to work in the youth department at Bedford Central.  The ability to respectfully work with groups of children and young adults and lead children’s programs is required.  Major duties include leading a weekly story time for children aged 3-5, called Books4Fun. Other duties include assisting with department record keeping, supplies inventory, filling in at the public services desk and assisting the staff with summer reading program activities.  May require travel to various BPLS branches, schools or daycares to present reading/literacy programs to community partners.

Skill in creating and presenting dramatic presentations/programs to children and teens that maintain their interest, deliver a message and promote reading and library use is required. The successful candidates will be proficient with various digital devices and associated apps, including but not limited to e-readers, iPads, and laptops; familiarity with social media sites and Microsoft Office applications is also required.

Library experience with respectfully assisting patrons of all ages with materials selection, use of the online catalog and recommending age-appropriate reading materials is preferred.

Part-time, 20 hours per week. Library Assistant 2 is in the 107 pay grade, which starts at $10.29/hr. and requires an associate’s degree or higher. Additional benefits include earned leave, ability to participate in dental and vision insurance plans, AFLAC, and the Commonwealth of VA 457 deferred compensation plan.    

Example schedule for the candidate is 9:00am – 6:00pm Mondays and Tuesdays and half days on either Fridays or Saturdays.
