SALARY:  $69,822 annually plus a benefits package equivalent to 52% of salary

DESCRIPTION:  Chesapeake Public Library is seeking a dynamic Library Manager III to lead the Central Library.
The Library Manager III manages all aspects of Central Library operations including staff supervision and leadership, program development, service improvement and community engagement.

The Library Manager III will:

  • Lead a diverse staff in providing library lending, information services and programs to over 300,000 customers annually.
  • Create a team of teams within Central Library to include lending, adult and youth services and Library partners.
  • Understand the role of the Library in the community and have the ability to balance innovation with community needs and service capacity; plan and evaluate library services and programs to fulfill strategic priorities and community needs.
  • Actively engage with customers, Library and City staff by providing service and collaborating on projects and initiatives; contribute to the Library's Leadership, Management, and Strategic Planning teams.
  • Respond to customer comments, problems and inquiries, explain policies and procedures, and resolve complaints to achieve mutually agreeable resolutions.
  • Foster an environment and facility which is welcoming, attractive, efficient and responsive to the needs of the community.
  • Develop and implement library policies and procedures which improve service delivery and incorporate best business practices.
  • Take active role in City of Chesapeake initiatives and partnerships such as Emergency Management Planning Operations, CARE, and Quality of Life teams.  
  • Continually develop professionally to incorporate, adapt and share best library practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including promoting the Library, presenting oral and written analysis and proposals, strategic planning and priorities, project management, budgeting, representing the Library and overseeing the Library system in the absence of the Director and Assistant Director.   

EDUCATION: Requires American Library Association accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three (3) months of employment.   Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:   In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five (5) years of related, full-time equivalent professional librarian experience, three of which were in a managerial position with direct supervisory experience. Public library experience preferred but other library experience considered.

  • Public library related experience within the last five (5) years.

  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and teams through collaboration.
  • Communicates openly and effectively with positive impact.
  • Highly skilled at delivering excellent, responsive customer service.
  • Experience coaching and developing staff.
  • Takes initiative in problem solving, making recommendations and presenting solutions.  
  • Ability to manage priorities and expectations, plan projects and work efficiently to continually improve service.
  • Proficient and comfortable using, learning and implementing technology.
